Achieving PR with your Non-Course-Related Work Experience

Achieving PR with your Non-Course-Related Work Experience

We understand that for international students, there are certain courses that better lead you obtain your Permanent Residence (PR) than others.

In the past 2 years, we have noticed that many students have been working in part-time jobs that are outside the scope of their studies. With the removal of the 40-hour-per-fornight work restriction, we have seen an increase in the number of international students participating in the Australian workforce.

For the most common PR visa subclasses such as 190, 189, 491, you will need to obtain a positive Skills Assessment in order to be eligible to apply. VETASSESS is the largest skills assessment authority for migration purposes in Australia.

Here, we look at examples of skills assessment for different occupations from VETASSESS. These detail the qualification and employment criteria for a positive outcome of your skills assessment.

Example 1: Café or Restaurant Manager

Example 2: Retail Manager

Example 3: Hotel or Motel Manager

Example 4: Customer Service manager

These occupations fall into Group C in VETASSESS system.

Group C (3) outlines that with an AQF Degree (unrelated) and 2 years’ experience in the occupation, you can achieve a positive skills assessment. This means that, if you have graduated with a degree that is NOT relevant to the occupation of choice but have 2 years of work experience in the occupation, you may still be eligible to apply for PR based on this experience.

Furthermore, Group C (1) and (2) requires you to have 1 years’ work experience where the work hours requirement is only 20 hours weekly.

Interestingly, many students have been able to obtain their PR through the Subclass 491/191 visa program as a Retail Manager, by working in occupations such as Store Manager, Shop Manager, Fast-food Manager, Quick-service Restaurant Manager, etc.

These are examples of common PR-leading occupations. If you want to learn more about your own PR prospects, get in touch with us and we will assess your work experiences and visa circumstances for you!
